The Space Between Us is the SOMA module addressing what happens between two people — the "relational hum," the signal system close relationships run on, and what genuine repair actually requires after that system misfires. It applies SOMA's core architecture (state, loop, drift) to the shared space between two nervous systems rather than to one person alone.
The Problem It Solves
"Something feels off" between two people, with no specific triggering event, is one of the hardest relational problems to address precisely because it resists being pinned down. This module gives it a name and mechanism: relational drift — accumulated small mismatches in the signal system two people share, rather than a single event or a character issue in either person.
Core Concepts
The Relational Hum
The ongoing, largely unconscious signal exchange running between two people in any close relationship.
The Signal System
The shorthand, tone, and implicit cues close relationships develop over time, which can misfire under strain.
Relational Drift
The accumulation of small signal mismatches that, left uncorrected, become the ambient quality of a relationship.
The Anatomy of Repair
What genuine repair actually requires structurally, distinct from surface-level smoothing-over.
Practical Examples
A short, ordinary text being read as cold or upset when nothing was wrong — a signal system misfire under accumulated strain.
Two people who "just don't talk like they used to," without either being able to name what changed — relational drift.
Founder Notes
Part of the original two-book SOMA foundation, extending the internal architecture of The Quiet Inside outward into close relationships — the same loops, now shared between two people instead of contained within one.
